Slice of Lifestyle: Making Magic on Mother's Day

by Katharine Dyson

You know the drill.

The “Big M Day” is on the way. Sunday, May 13. Send her flowers, bring her breakfast in bed, take her out for lunch, give up your day on the course with your pals to bond with her, maybe help her in the garden. Works for many.

But let’s suppose Mom is into golf.

Good news — you can take her out for a round and then stop for lunch. Or you can check out the pro shop and buy her a gift that will keep giving, all season long.Looking for some inspiration?

GOLF FASHIONS

She will love Bobby Jones’ Women’s Swing Cool XH2O Performance Wear with Coolmax fashions — the black Utility Jacket is particularly smart. And if you want her to really look cool around her golfing friends, buy her BJ’s Veranda Plaid striped jacket in a wedgewood, gray and white plaid and pair it with a duel-zip white sweatervest, matching argyle pattern, which lives as comfortably in the clubhouse as it does on the course. Or get her the blue-and-white striped blazer, trimmed with white piping ($325). All very snazzy.

A popular line in pro shops, look for Fairway & Greene’s Catalina Collection, which evokes vibrant color vibes in Pima cottons with sexy stretch in natty Navy, White, Lapis and Punch, with accents of Marigold and Pale Pink. Spring for one of the new short skirts or updated (to-the-knee) Bermuda shorts, which, trust me, are the in-thing to wear. Fairway & Greene (no relation to your favorite FG Magazine) also has great cable sweaters and the new Teflon-coated, Merino-lined wind sweaters, and the vests cry out for compliments.

skies and balmy climes aren’t always 24/7, so having rain gear that works and looks good at the same time is important. Help her out. Just think: Each time she pulls out her Sun Mountain RainFlex jacket ($140), she will think of you. It feels oh-so-soft and silky, almost weightless. The jacket is available in a half-zip or full-zip top with YKK waterproof zippers and stand-up collar. Besides coming in yellow, black, aqua and light blue, it has a two-year waterproof guarantee. And if you really want to score, also buy her the RainFlex pants.

Cutter and Buck’s Annika line is a win-win when it comes to finding something Mom will wear again and again. Their new Tour Short, a longer short in navy, red, white and black, is taking off big time, and their Drytec Soar Polo, which comes in subtle minty aqua with a slash of yellow, and the Tempo Piped Mock with long sleeves, are good choices.

CB ProTec apparel, which keeps you cool and dry, also washes and dries like a dream without a need to iron. She’ll love that.

SHOES
What woman doesn’t want a new pair of shoes? Check out Etonic’s classy G>Sok —like the sharp number with white band accents (pictured). Because it’s non-cleated, this one walks seamlessly from fairway to dinner. And, oh yes, with all kinds of high-tech cushion support, it wears great right out of the box. And more good news: It’s waterproof. Several other styles include the St-GT with Gore-Tex, The Leisure Series and the Lites Plus & Lites, all mostly white with various color accents.

GLOVES
You’ll be a hero with this luxury-shouting gift, a softly seductive off-white leather golf glove with Audubon-like painted flowers by Fairway Skins (pictured). Choose from Cereus, Strawberry, Lily, Poppy, Magnolia, Passion Flower and Morning Glory. They feel great, too. Top off her “ensemble” with a matching floral zippered purse. (gloves $36, purse $32)

SUNGLASSES
Not only do they look cool, they do all they’re supposed to do to protect her baby blues. No doubt about it: Callaway’s Hybrid Series is hot. Look at the H302 semi-rimless wrap ($130) or H303 rimless, both with Neox technology. In the Collection Series, the bronze, rimless, oval-shaped lenses of the C401O are superlight and designed to fit smaller faces, and the white-rimmed D410’s ergonomic design flatters and protects.

BAGS
Keri Golf bags ($65 to $375) will bring out her feminine side. Although they do come in satiny black with subtle pink accents, most of Keri Golf’s bags come in such candy colors as pink (pictured, previous page), green, white and navy. Some are detailed with small colorful rectangular “tiles;” others with splashes of yellow on pink.

The bags even come with a mirror, insulated drink pocket and a small attached zip bag. Nothing it seems has been forgotten, and trust us, these bags are extremely durable and well-constructed. We also like Keri’s new, fun super-sized totes, which coordinate with the bag designs.

Want to help Mom take off pounds in seconds? Unless she never has to carry her clubs, she’ll love you for getting her Sun Mountain’s new Hug Carry System ($199) — actually a golf bag with a U-shaped padded “arm” that fits around your waist removing 10 to 15 pounds from your shoulders. The bag not only lightens her load, but it’s also available in snappy red, black, orange and blue.

If Mom travels with her clubs, she’ll appreciate the Cargo Bag (from $119). Lugging clubs through airports can be a struggle for the “weaker sex,” but now you can put your clubs in the bag, which is solid enough to stand on, slip the rigid plastic hood on the top, fasten it and you’re ready to check your clubs to your faraway destination. It works — I’ve tried it and love it: my new driver came through with flying colors. The Cargo Bag has several pockets and even holds a pair of golf shoes, a rain suit, balls and other golf items.
