When most people think of Alister MacKenzie they think Cypress Point, Augusta or Pasatiempo. But he made his presence known in the middle of the Sacramento Valley, too, way back in the 1930s, and now Haggin Oaks' MacKenzie Course puts the Scottish master architect's work into full focus for muni players, just as it did for some of the game's greats, from Hogan to Snead to Hagen — and local talents like the late George Archer — when Haggin Oaks hosted many pro events in its early years. Today the course is a mature, walkable and sneaky-tough trip into the past, its fairways lined with huge oaks, its push-up greens on the small side, its bunkering simple and sparse. It's part of Morton Golf's suite of Capital City courses, which also includes the adjacent, recently reconfigured Arcade Creek, as well as Bing Maloney and Bartley Cavanaugh.
